A finely detailed museum-authorized reproduction of the “Head of the Virgin” from Michelangelo’s Pietà, one of the most celebrated sculptures of the Italian Renaissance. This wall-mounted sculpture captures the serene and contemplative expression of the Virgin Mary as depicted in Michelangelo’s masterpiece housed in Saint Peter’s Basilica, Vatican City. Produced in 1982 under the supervision of the Reproduction Studio of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the piece was created using direct impression molds taken from the original sculpture developed by the Department of Scientific Research of the Vatican Museums. The result is a highly accurate facsimile designed to replicate the subtle forms and refined features of the original marble work. The reproduction is made from cold-cast marble, a material consisting of finely ground Carrara marble bonded with polymer resin. Carrara marble, quarried in Italy, is the same type of stone used by Michelangelo for the original Pietà. This process allows the piece to closely resemble the texture and appearance of carved marble while remaining suitable for decorative display.
